Last week, we saw that Joseph’s brothers took his coat of many colors and threw him into a pit. They meant it as a punishment for Joseph’s daring to dream so big. What they didn’t know was that the pit would put Joseph on a path to an amazing journey. When we’re called to something greater, we often have to go through a pit experience. The pit is where we are isolated from everyone and may feel that we’ve lost everything. But interestingly, it is in the pit when we can truly hear from God. It’s a place where we learn what we don’t want, so that we can become who we need to be to get what we do want.
The pit is where we can sharpen our resolve to get out of the pit and vow never to return. So, if you’ve lost a job, relationship, opportunity or feel depleted emotionally or spiritually, remember—this could just be the beginning of an amazing journey.
Before I met my husband, I was in an unfulfilling relationship. When I finally got the courage to leave, I felt defeated and helpless. I went into a season of questioning myself and God. I didn’t know it at the time, but that pit experience put me on a path to becoming a new person. It caused me to really seek God and decide if I really believed that God was good. During my time in the pit, I learned the power of stewardship, wrote my first book, retired from the bench and became an entrepreneur as a biblical life coach. While it wasn’t a pleasant experience, the pit put me on a path to be closer to God and redefine my purpose.

Think about where you are on your success journey. If you find yourself in a pit, isolated and not working towards your dream, remember that the pit is a part of every success journey. Don’t dwell on what drove you to the pit. Instead, focus on what you can learn while you’re there. Pray about this new path the pit has revealed. The pit is only meant to last for a season, so ask yourself if you have let what should have been a short time become your state of being.
